CONGRATULATIONS: STANFORD’S DAVID SHAW WILL BE THE HOUSTON TEXANS’ NEXT COACH

Smile, you just go paidBy Rock Mayock 10:30 p.m. | Congratulations are in order for David Shaw and the Stanford Cardinal for earning consecutive PAC-12 titles and Rose Bowl berths. Unfortunately for Stanford fans and alumni, this cause for celebration will be short lived as the dominos continue to fall within the PAC-12 coaching ranks when both the Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins pursue Shaw to fill their head coaching vacancies.

As we know, the NFL offseason and the head coach carousel go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly. The short list of coaches either on the hot seat or already been terminated includes Sexy Rexy Ryan, Mike Smith, Jim Schwartz, Leslie Frazier, Joe Philbin, Greg Schiano and of course Gary Kubiak. Fortunately for Shaw, his back to back Rose Bowl appearances coupled with an impeccable reputation will allow him to cherry pick his next stop. Lets evaluation his options.

Atlanta Falcons: Much the chagrin of the Falcons faithful, Mike Smith will not be fired at the conclusion of this season.

Detroit Lions:  Jim Schwartz will be fired, however, the Ford family will have difficulty luring elite coaching talent to Detroit. A bankrupt city, evaporating population/tax base and thug talent make this option unrealistic.

Houston Texans: As we know, Gary Kubiak has already been issued his walking papers. Texas does not have personal income tax and the Texans have a loaded roster on both offense and defense. Although Bob McNair has expressed his preference for a head coach with NFL experience, you can never apply too high of a premium on the next big thing as opposed to a retread. The Texans will be at the top of Shaw’s list of coaching options.

Miami Dolphins: Both Joe Philbin as well as Jeff Ireland will be terminated in response to the Richie Incognito/Jonathan Martin Fiasco. Florida does not have personal income tax and the Dolphins have a franchise quarterback in Ryan Tannehill. The Dolphins will be atop Shaw’s coaching options.

Minnesota Vikings: Leslie Frazier will be fired. The Vikings are a semi viable option due to Adrian Peterson, however, the log jam of subpar QB talent and aging defensive front 7 will make the Vikings a stretch.

New York Jets:  Rex Ryan will be fired, however, the Jets are not a viable option. There is zero incentive for Shaw to move to a cold weather state to coach a team with limited offensive weapons, sky high fan expectations, and the highest personal income taxes in the nation.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Greg Schiano will not be fired, although he should be.

It is apparent there will be only two teams with a realistic chance of landing the brightest coaching prospect since Pete Carroll bolted for the Seahawks. Shaw’s decision will ultimately come down to two factors: Who has more talent and who will provide a better chance to win immediately. Therefore it is obvious the Houston Texans will announce David Shaw as their head coach on or around December 30. Congratulations and good luck on the new job!
